In an informal grassroots straw poll, Senator Russ Feingold has come in second place among a selection of nine Democrats as a potential rival to Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination to become President in 2012.
The poll asks, “If Obama makes deep cuts in Social Security, should he get a primary challenger and if so, who do you favor?” Many Democrats, of course, have already decided that Barack Obama doesn’t deserve their party’s presidential nomination in 2012 because Obama has swerved too far to the Right. On issues like corporate bailouts, climate change, health care reform, offshore drilling, unclean coal, marriage equality, separation of church and state, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, government surveillance, torture coverups, war, endangered species, tax cuts for the wealthy and extreme presidential powers, Barack Obama has caved in to the Republicans over and over again. Social Security is just the latest betrayal of the promise of 2008.
Other proposed candidates for the Democratic nomination, such as Hillary Clinton and Evan Bayh, were far behind, or received no voted at all. Russ Feingold is clearly in the top tier of Democratic presidential challengers to Barack Obama in 2012.
