Protect America - Act!
Aug 21st, 2007 by director
This month is of the most silently sad for American history. At the begining of August 2007, in the middle of the night, Congress passed a new law that gives unprecedented new powers to spy against Americans to Alberto Gonzales, infamous for his dishonesty, affinity for torture, and use of the federal government for political purposes; and John Michael McConnell, little-known Director of National Intelligence who was one of the original architects of the Total Information Awareness project.
The Protect America Act gives Gonzales and McConnell extraordinary powers to establish electronic surveillance of American citizens without any outside approval or oversight. Under the Protect America Act, Gonzales and McConnell alone have the power to ensure that the electronic spying is being conducted appropriately. If they abuse the system, there is no one watching to stop them - not any judge, and not the Congress.
The Protect America Act was passed in the context of allegations that the federal government has resurrected Total Information Awareness, and is using electronic surveillance to search through Americans’ private emails, listen to their telephone calls, and keep records on their use of the Internet.
In short, the Protect America Act gives Gonzales and McConnell, and through them President Bush, the power of Big Brother to watch over practically all aspects of our lives.
One site is dedicated to resisting Big Brother, and it takes on the name of the Protect America Act in order to do so. Changing the law’s name to make it an imperative, Protect America. Act! provides information and links to activism against the Protect America Act.
Please, get involved, before it’s too late.
