Problem of Child Soldiers Ignored by Presidential Candidates
Jun 18th, 2007 by director
As a political issue, the importance of confronting the use of child soldiers by government militaries and other armed forces around the world should be easy to figure out. When presidential candidates speak out against using children as soldiers, they’re standing up for basic moral values and appealing to our love for children.
Why is it, then, that none of the Democratic presidential candidates have given their support to the Child Soldiers Prevention Act of 2007? The legislation, introduced into the Senate by Dick Durbin, requires military aid to be cut to nations who exploit children by making them into soldiers or servants for soldiers. The proposed law also establishes investigations into the use of child soldiers in every nation where there is an embassy of the American government.
Still, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joseph Biden, Chris Dodd, and Dennis Kucinich have not given their support to the bill. Why?
